Imbolc Blessings and a Spell

Good Morning and Happy Imbolc!

We are at the halfway point between winter and spring. The daylight hours are getting longer and here at home the weather has been swinging wildly back and forth from spring like temperatures- to snow, ice and tonight down into the single digits for the low temperature.

Imbolc is a quiet sabbat, but one full of a deeper meaning. It is a time to start over. To look within, to let go of things in your past and to move confidently forward. Maybe you need to let go of some friends, or people you thought were friends. Those old hurts or betrayals, that seem to linger on? Let them go. Consider those old hurts a lesson and move forward as a stronger and much wiser person. Perhaps a you are considering a lifestyle change? Maybe you have decided to start to eat healthier or become more active? Well now is the moment!

This is a perfect time to focus on yourself, what do you want? What would you like to accomplish? Take this sabbat of light and look within. Allow your light to shine and realize that you are able to accomplish whatever you dream of- if you are willing to work for it!

Here is an Imbolc spell of mine that was originally published in the 2006 Witches Datebook. I thought I would share it with you so you could work this over the weekend. It calls on Brigid the triple Celtic goddess of smithcraft, healing and poetry. For this spell, light as many white candles as you safely can and repeat the spell verse with intention three times.
Brigid, goddess of poetry, health and fire,

On your special day, grant my inner desire.

Your sacred flames bring light to me in so many ways,

Please send inspiration and passion to me this day.*
Once the spell verse is repeated, stay and mediate for a time on the lessons you have learned, and think of new creative ways to achieve all of your goals for the future.
To close up the spell say these lines;

By the power of Imbolc's inner fire,

Brigid assist me with what I desire.
Watch over your spell candles. Allow them to burn in a safe place until they go out on their own.

I wish you a Blessed Imbolc! Go on, embrace your inner light and shine!
Blessed be, Ellen

Sign up for my "Full Moon Magick" class today. It is only $22.00 and you will receive lessons, and fifteen lunar rituals. This Moon Magick class has all of the lunar eclipse information updated for 2013 and it also includes a NEW spell for the upcoming "Black Moons" of 2014.  Four out of the five online classes are on sale at the moment, and they are all very budget friendly.
Payment is made thru Paypal on my website and it is simple, safe and secure. Check out all five of my online classes! Here is a direct link to my online classes. http://www.ellendugan.com/10.html

The first full moon of the year is typically called the Wolf Moon. The nights are cold, the trees and flowers are sleeping under the snow and ice, and the wolves are on the prowl.
Due to popular request I am once again sharing my Wolf Moon Spell.

On this first full moon of the year, traditionally called the Wolf Moon, take some time to stop and reflect on the magick and medicine of the wolf. The wolf is a popular animal ally with Witches and magick users, as the wolf is a pathfinder, leader, and a teacher. The wolf has an incredible sense of family, as well as a strong sense of independence. The wolf also encourages the teacher within all of us to step up and share knowledge and information with others.

At this time of the Wolf Moon, perform a spell to assist you in tapping into your intuition and inner wisdom. Whether you wish to share your knowledge with circle or coven mates, or decide to formally teach a class. Calling on the wolf will give you the strength to walk your individual magickal path, and to assist others to find theirs, with courage and shrewdness. Set up your altar with white candles and a representation of the wolf. This can be a small statue, or a photo. As the full moon rises, turn and face the moon and call upon the magick of the wolf. When you are ready, repeat the spell below three times.
**On this enchanted night of the full Wolf Moon,
Send wisdom to me, by this Witches’ tune.
Ally and friend, I honor the moon at which you bay,
Help me to teach and lead in the best possible way.
(Allow your spell candles to burn in a safe place until they go out on their own.) Happy Full Moon!

In other news, I am spending the next few weeks finishing up book #15. I will be announcing the working title in a month or two. My coven meets in a week, on Imbolc day, and Convocation, where I am a featured presenter, is just around the corner!
Lots to do, so I'd better get to it!
Happy Esbat!

Blessed be, Ellen

Follow Your Bliss

Hello,
I thought for something fun I would highlight the Major Arcana cards from my Witches Tarot over the next few months... I figured it would be best to start with the beginning so we begin with "The Fool" card. The following text is copyrighted material and comes from my Witches Tarot Companion Book

The sequence of the twenty two cards in the Major Arcana tell us the story of The Fool’s journey. With the first card number 0 we see the Fool begin his quest, young, carefree, happy and open to the experiences of his spiritual passage. By the time the Fool works his way through to the final Major Arcana card, numbered twenty-one, The World, our traveler is older, wiser and has embraced the mysteries of his path.

This Major Arcana card is all about the daring leap of faith, Sure it is possible that you might make a mistake, or fall down, but hey! You can always get right back up again. Sometimes that is the best way to learn, by following your dreams and daring to do. The Fool encourages you to be open to new prospects and ideas. he dares you to step outside of the box. Live on the edge- be confident and bold. There is a whole wide magickal world out there... go explore it!

 Key Words:
Follow your bliss. Adventure, fresh starts, exploration, a journey.
New ideas, take a chance and chase your dreams. The beginning of a spiritual quest, exploring a new magickal path or tradition. The leap of faith.-Ellen Dugan, Witches Tarot Companion

The Fool card opens your personal chapter on new adventures, and a spiritual journey. This card is perfect to work with when you are starting a new job, or beginning a course of magickal studies. Embrace the spiritual lesson of the Fool, and see what wonders he has to show you and look forward to what great adventures you will have.

It takes a courageous person to listen to their heart, and to follow their bliss. There is a sacred wisdom to the Fool. Pay attention and see where he leads you.   www.witchestarot.com
Blessed be,
Ellen

Challenges and Motivation

Good Morning,

My master plan for this winter was to find an affordable, close to home, and friendly gym. I hit a plateau this summer and damned if I could get pass it. Considered throwing myself off of it for a while.  Mix in that with some ghastly peri-menopause symptoms including weight gain, insomnia, hot flashes, fatigue, and not being able to loose anything but 1 pound in six weeks- which I still can't figure out.
I did what worked so well before- I lost 60 pounds that way and kept it off for 3 years... Now that same walking, and diet routine was in place and only one pound lost in 6 weeks. (Insert primal scream, here.)
I was exhausted and started to drink lots of caffeine (tea and diet soda) to try and stay awake during the day, and I was stressed out and discouraged as hell.

Here I am looking at hitting the big 5-0 this year, and damn it, I want these 25 -oh that's normal every woman gains weight when they start 'the change'  extra pounds- gone. I worked so hard 4 years ago to loose 60 pounds and gaining back 25 because of stress and hormone changes is a buzz kill.
Perfection is over rated. I just want to get back to where I was, and be as healthy and strong as I can be.

The other reason I was considering joining a gym is because every winter I get stuck inside unable to do my 2 mile walks outdoors as I typically do 8 months out of the year...
I have work out DVD's but they are annoying if you do them all the time. And again you are stuck inside. Plus, if I live on the edge and do take walks in the wind and cold I tend to get a cold or a sinus infection. Right away.
About a month ago (after valiantly taking my walks outside in the cold anyway) I got a nasty ear infection and it lasted for over 3 weeks. Wow, I had no idea an ear infection could make you so sick. Two rounds of antibiotics, decongestants, and ear drops, 3 trips to the doctor's office and  finally I had to have the ear flushed out so I could hear out of it again...  Ick.

But finally I am over that and have the okay from the doctor to continue to exercise. I made some radical changes to my diet while I was sick over those 3 weeks and to my amazement lost 5 pounds over the holidays. The doctor's scale confirmed that and I was tickled. And a little flabbergasted.
What did I do? I gave up diet soda, all caffeine, chocolate and I cut waaaay back on milk.
I eat yogurt and cheese- I get plenty of calcium- but I cut back on my daily servings of dairy- which I discovered had been far too many anyway, and I guess the changes in the diet must have kicked started something.

That day I left the doctor's office- hearing in stereo once again, I called the gym that I had been scouting out, and made an appointment to come in and take a tour. I liked what I saw. People of ALL ages, shapes and sizes, I saw a tiny older woman who was 80 if she was a day- just flying on an elliptical machine. (Scary but impressive).

So I signed up and went ahead and purchased sessions with a trainer as well. My reasoning? I have NO idea how to use any of the equipment in the gym- this way I can have someone teach me to use the equipment correctly. I have 20 more pounds to loose and I am determined to keep my knees injury free. Plus a trainer can set up a smart work out routine and  keep me motivated. I had my first session with my trainer a couple of days ago. And honestly, I was nervous as hell.

Ended up he is a nice young man, think big, quiet, football player/ teddy bear type. He was encouraging, supportive, soft spoken and probably younger than my own kids. And just when I convinced myself that he was a sweetie, he bent my happy ass like a  pretzel, when it was time to stretch out. Well good gods.
I had no idea I could bend like that.

I went home thinking, well, that wasn't too bad. Then my muscles decided to show me exactly where they had been used in a new and different way.  Yesterday we had crazy warm and windy weather mid 60's in January, so I was able to zip up a hoodie and go for a half hour walk up in the park in the sunshine. I was directed by the trainer not to do any weight lifting - but to either come in and hit the treadmill for a half hour or if the unseasonably warm weather held- to go do a mile and a half walk in the sunshine. I was only too happy with that assignment.

While on my walk I discovered my legs were sore in all new places. So were my arms and so were my shoulders. Well awesome. The best way to get over a plateau (I am told) is to do something different. Now today I go back for the second session, I thought we would do the same machine routines so I could memorize them and I was informed very quietly. "Oh no- Saturday we are working with free weights. All different things."

Which I find a little nerve-wracking when that is said with an affable smile. I think this guy is cheerfully relentless. And you know what? I'm up for that. So yeah, I am nervous but I am up for the challenge.
The motivation has spilled over into other areas of my life as well. I finished up chapter 6 this week and cranked out over 2000 words on chapter 7 yesterday morning.
Then after my walk in the park I figured out and outlined what the rest of chapter 7 of book #15 will be.
Fist pump!  It was a good day's work.

So I wonder what kind of work out challenges the trainer will throw at me today?
Bring it on big guy.

Blessed be, Ellen

In other news, recently I was able to get an advance look at my witch-friend Tess Whitehurst's upcoming book, The Magic of Flowers. Her newest book will be released in June this year and you are in for a treat. I was delighted to give Tess a blurb for this new book and its wonderful. Here is the cover art and the publisher's description.

I sat and worked my way through her 500 page manuscript and it is just like Tess herself, lovely, comforting, and filled with gentle wisdom. This nice chunky book will be available through Llewellyn Worldwide in June of 2013.For more information about Tess and all of her charming books, and Feng Shui practice, please visit her website at www.tesswhitehurst.com

Next, is my friend and coven-sister, Ember Grant's second book. I was able to get a look at this book when I helped her put together the list of terms for the index. She fed me lunch and wine "may" have been involved, but we had a great time doing the index- why not make a several hour long chore- into something fun? I started doing that years ago when it came time to do the index in my own books. (Call in my coven sisters- make margaritas and have them help me pull the index together on the book.) And so I was delighted to help a friend do the same.

Ember has an affinity with crystals and magick that has always inspired me, and made me a bit envious. She is like a walking encyclopedia when it comes to crystals and stones. I remember after her first book Magical Candle Crafting was released I looked at her and said. "Well what are you going to write for your second book? Chop, chop, girlfiend let's go!"  Obviously my challenge was accepted. This magickal book will also be released in June of 2013 by Llewellyn Worldwide. Here is her cover art and the publisher's description.

Well, that's it from here. I need to get back to work on my own book. Book #15 is rolling along and I hope to (nope, I WILL)  finish up another chapter this week. My own deadline is getting closer and with Convocation just a month and a half away I need to be about finished before I head up to Detroit.

I am a "Guest of Honor"  this year, and will be giving four lectures and doing an author meet and greet. Here is a link to the speaking schedule for Convocation 2013. Convocation 2013 Class Schedule
The theme for this year's Convocation is "The Sun" card and "Illumination". So just for fun here is the divine Sun Child and "The Sun" card from my deck Witches Tarot.
